Masterplan

The Government of the Republic of Nigeria is planning a new city with a self-sustaining sub center in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, called ‘Centenary City'. A site of approx. 13 km², located in close proximity to the international airport and only 25 km away from Abuja's CBD, has been set aside for this purpose. The city shall not only serve about 200,000 people - residents, employees and visitors alike -, but also combine sustainable urban design principles with progressive land uses resulting in an urban form that respects its surrounding natural landscape and is socially and economically viable. Furthermore, Centenary City shall be awarded a special tax status, which will support its role as the new financial center of Nigeria.

The AS+P master plan envisages dense central areas set within a system of windmill-like arterial roads, that formulated a central core and heart of the new district. In combination with an iconic skyline it seeks to responsibly act as a counterpart to the impressive natural topography of the site. The overall city layout of grid-iron streets was also a formal reference to the central areas of Abuja, and thus to its idea as a city.

In addition, baseline calculations for all aspects of integrated sustainable urban planning - functional diversity, walkability and sustainable transportation, as well as environmental aspects, blue-green infrastructure, energy demand and waste management - were produced and verified.

During this process, renowned international experts gave valuable insight into the technical aspects of environmental urban planning. Efficient energy solutions as well as sustainable water and waste management, could thus be incorporated into the overall layout of the district and its land use plan. As such, the master plan is able to set the course for an all-inclusive city with the best and most advanced infrastructure and building design standard in the country.
