With the promotion of Karlsruher SC to Germany’s second division, the debate regarding a possible new stadium in Karlsruhe resurfaced. Against this background, AS+P were tasked with updating the three possible locations under discussion for a new stadium in the Karlsruhe area, and comparing them.
AS+P first developed a schematic sample stadium, in which the parameters that determine the planning, such as spectator capacity, utilized areas, functional areas, distribution of standing and seating sections and supplementary uses, were implemented by way of example. These were each adapted to the spatial and accessibility situations at the possible locations “Untere Hub”, “Wildpark” and “Mastweide”.

Subsequently, each location was examined in greater depth using overriding quality characteristics (including amount of space, connections, availability of space, planning law, ecology, restrictions, marketing quality) and a cost and sales estimate (PROPROJEKT Planungsmanagement & Projektberatung GmbH) and evaluated comparatively. The findings revealed the “Wildpark” location of the existing stadium to be the most suitable. In the meantime, a legal zoning planning process has been successfully completed and a call for tender launched for the planning and construction of the stadium.
