The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) is currently implementing an ambitious public transport system for the entire city of Riyadh. Core of this system will be an extensive METRO network. The design of the METRO system is progressing fast and is already in an advanced planning stage.
This is seen as a historic opportunity to transform the road space along the METRO corridor, which is currently focused exclusively on the car. The aim is a holistic solution - integrating all users - that will help the success of the proposed METRO.

In this context, AS+P was commissioned by the ADA to develop an Urban Design & Streetscape Manual (UDM), giving international planners mandatory functional and design guidelines.
Based on the prevailing urban context, Urban Street Types have been developed, which then determine the parameters for the dimensioning and design of the road space. A clear design process and a variety of 'tool boxes' with applicable design elements have been defined.
A key aspect has been the integration of the different transport modes. Taking into account local circumstances, a number of guidelines have been defined, for example regarding junction layout and the location and interaction of bus stops, crossings and bicycle paths.
Typical designs demonstrate the application of the manual on realistic scenarios along the METRO corridor.
