Thumamah Corridor

In early 2014 AS+P was commissioned with drawing up a structural concept for the 30-kilometer Thumamah Corridor in the north of Riyadh. Of immense importance for the expansion of the city northwards, the corridor was to be investigated with regard to the future form it would take in terms of urban design and traffic, and initial meaningful and feasible roads outlined.
Different facilities along the road, different levels of traffic, different intersections, both grade-separated and at-grade, as well as the integration of bus traffic and a bus stop infrastructure resulted in special requirements.
AS+P produced various versions of a design for the road, which met the requirements listed above in a variety of ways. These versions were discussed with employees of the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) in three workshops. The preferred solution, which took the bordering facilities as well as the traffic-related requirements into consideration, was subsequently selected. In particular it was possible to prioritize the planned bus traffic and satisfy the needs of pedestrians in the form of broad, shady areas in which to relax.
It was laid down in binding form that the solution chosen would serve as the basis for further detailed planning.
