“Elevation E” residential high-rise

Mannheim, Germany, since 2017

On behalf of GBG Mannheim, AS+P is designing a residential high-rise with 10,000 square meters of living space. The sculptural shape of the building forms an “E”, one of the four letters in the word HOME. Turning the term into reality through high-rises is one of the creative guidelines for the FRANKLIN conversion project.

In December 2015, as part of an iterative planning process in which the City of Mannheim is moving forward the development of the FRANKLIN conversion site, MWS Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft announced a workshop procedure for the design of the four highlights at the heart of the quarter. The aim of the procedure, in which three planning firms participated, was on the one hand a review of the creative guideline developed by the quality team, which involved a family of high-rises in the shape of letters (H-O-M-E), and on the other the architectural design of the high-rises, taking urban development, design, functional, and economic parameters into account. ln an intensive and discursive initial process, all the highest points were addressed by all three firms before the individual buildings were then allocated to them for more detailed planning. As a result of this process AS+P was tasked with designing the “E” high-rise, which is being realized by GBG – Mannheimer Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH.

The development concept envisages a rectangular, 13-story structure (Elevation “E”) on a two-story podium with approx. 10,000 square meters of living space. Whereas the upper section of the multi-story building will feature apartments on single stories, the podium will boast two-story maisonette apartments, as well as the entrance to the high-rise. Parking spaces and the tenants’ cellars will be located in a two-story underground car park that will be the size of almost the entire site. Construction will be in line with the KfW55 energy-efficient building standard.
