The 15-member jury of the “Lu.erleben” competition bestowed 1st Prize on the proposals submitted by AS+P for the ideas section “Overall Urban Planning Concept”, and awarded it a joint 3rd Prize for the Karstadt realization section.

The competition called for urban planning, architectural and open-space concepts to redesign the retail hub along the Mainz’s Ludwigstrasse, which the locals nickname the “Lu”. The proposals were also expected to contribute to a sustainable improvement in climatic conditions in the city. The entry by AS+P hinged on widening the Vordere Präsenzgasse and designing the plaza round Schillerplatz and met with “great approval” according to the organizers of the competition, the City of Mainz and Boulevard Lu GmbH & Co. KG. The interdisciplinary AS+P team headed by architect Katharina Weber-Ott, a project partner at AS+P, is delighted at having scored so highly in such a high-level competition.

The “outstanding winner entries” will now form the basis for the future design and applications for planning permission for the Ludwigsstrasse. As winners of the competition, the team consisting of three Mainz-based companies FAERBER ARCHITEKTEN, Jestaedt + Partner Stadtplaner and BIERBAUM.AICHELE Landschaftsarchitekten will now support the realization phase.

AS+P shared joint 3rd Prize with Stuttgart architectural practice Blocher Partners who had teamed up with landscape architects TOPOS from Berlin. In October 2019, a total of eight architecture companies were invited to participate in the competition, including Hamburg’s gmp International along with WES LandschaftsArchitektur and Frankfurt’s KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten with nsp christoph schonhoff landschaftsarchitekten stadtplaner from Hanover.
