General Plan for Baku City: The process kicks off

At a plenary meeting of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, together with AS+P and others involved in the project, outlined the overall process as well as the basic characteristics of the development concept for Baku. Also on the plenum: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the Baku State Design Institute (BDLI).

On location in Baku: During the meeting, Joachim Schares, Managing Partner at AS+P, highlighted the international trends in urban planning. He then addressed the specificities of Baku that need to considered when implementing the General Plan. In this context, he pointed to the experiences that the planners at AS+P have gained locally since as long ago as 2002, when they developed the ideas for the urban and transportation planning concept for the Baku Airport Road and the revitalization of the corniche along the Caspian Sea. AS+P is proud and pleased to once again be handling a task in Azerbaijan.

Samir Nuriyev, Chairman of the State Committee of Urban Planning and Architecture, emphasized in his welcoming address, just how important the project is for Baku. Moreover, it will be making a great contribution, he said, to preserving and restoring the capital city’s historical and cultural heritage, while also promoting the city’s business life, which is gradually moving in the direction of post-industrial structures.
