On the shortlist: The jury has selected AS+P’s proposal for a 30-hectare space south of Duisburg’s main railway station to go forward into the second phase of the competition from among a total of 17 entries.

In July of last year, in close cooperation with the City of Duisburg, GEBAG Flächenentwicklungsgesellschaft GmbH launched a two-phase urban planning and outdoor planning competition including a special civic dialog section. The objective is to create the planning basis for a new, forward-looking urban quarter that frees the site from its current isolation and re-integrates it into the urban fabric.

The idea is for a vibrant quarter to arise on what was formerly the commercial rail freight and switching yards: The AS+P proposal entails three quarters interconnected by three different outside space typologies, namely an urban park offering recreation, a mixed-usage neighborhood, and a mobility strip. Moreover, the task also involved integrating a sustainable mobility concept and designing a memorial to the 2010 Loveparade disaster. In the second phase of the competition, the revised AS+P proposal will be published along with the other entries selected. In the form of online voting, citizens of Duisburg will be able to choose a favorite that will then be communicated to the jury. The latter will then reconvene on March 11 to select the winning proposal. All entries that gain an award will subsequently be presented in an “online exhibition”.
