The project was one of a total of 1,353 entries that came from all over the world including Europe, Australia and the United States and it succeeded in winning over the jury on account of its pleasing architectural appearance, sustainable urban planning, and cost-effectiveness.
AS+P’s brief was to produce an urban master plan for the 90-hectare area that included the infrastructure and transportation planning. The work was commissioned by Messe Frankfurt Venue GmbH & Co KG, CA Immo Deutschland GmbH (previously Vivico Real Estate GmbH) and aurelis Real Estate GmbH & Co. KG. Thanks to the project’s pivotal location between Messe Frankfurt and the Central Railway Station as well as Platz der Einheit and the Rebstockgelände it was once one of the most important inner-city development areas in Germany. Back in 1999, AS+P had already presented a first masterplan that was to culminate in a new mixed-use quarter with an urban flair. Later AS+P drew up in-depth structural concepts, launched an international urban planning competition, and finally developed the Frankfurt Trade Fair Complex Masterplan 2020.
Today, the main features of this newly developed quarter are the Europa Allee, with its feel of a boulevard, a six-hectare park, and excellent cycle tracks. Moreover, both residents and visitors can benefit from numerous cafés, stores and restaurants. Europaviertel West is one of the first five urban quarters in Europe to be awarded the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) Platinum certificate for sustainability.
