Open-space design concept
The “Hanau Nord” quarter lies in the eastern part of the “Nordwest” district. The existing urban fabric divides the area into five subsections, which can be clearly distinguished from one another in terms of architecture and spatial position. The aim of the strategic open-space concept AS+P has devised is to create a strong, readily legible model for the open space that fosters a clear identity while providing a coherent overall concept for upgrading and developing the residential environment of the estate. The open-space concept provides for an individual design theme for each of the subsections, something clearly reflected in the design language of the street furniture, routing, and greenery, and which thus enhances the potential for identifying with the neighborhood and provides orientation within it. An attractive range of activity areas, garden spaces, and playgrounds for children of all age groups offers a broad array of high-quality and easily usable open spaces spread throughout the neighborhood. There will be numerous additions and upgrades to the network of routes in the area: The barrier posed by the Fallbach stream, which divides the quarter into eastern and western sides, will be eliminated by adding not only a bridge, but also attractive waterside landscaping. The entrance areas are also being reorganized and enhanced with bicycle racks as well as zones where locals can chat and relax. A climate-adapted, graduated parkland and woodland concept optimizes the existing extensive green spaces in the district.
