Survey of the use of available parking
The Kuhwaldsiedung is a residential area between the Frankfurt trade fair grounds and the City West district. There is not much parking in the narrow streets of this historical quarter which means that residents have to walk long distances between the places where they have parked their cars and their apartments. Added to which, the remaining road space is too narrow for rescue vehicles and the local garbage collection service. Initially, AS+P looked into whether existing parking was so clogged up due to visitors to and exhibitors at the Frankfurt trade fair grounds or due to people working in City West. To this end, a survey was conducted of the parking available and several surveys conducted of how the available parking was occupied both during and outside trade fairs, the cars’ registration numbers were noted down and pedestrian traffic recorded. The analysis of this data shed light on how the available parking was occupied at different times of day and on the distribution of parked cars whose registration numbers were not local. Based on these results, AS+P suggested measures for managing the parking area which might effectively prevent outside vehicles from parking in the Kuhwaldsiedlung. The concepts were presented to citizens at a meeting of the local advisory council and advantages and disadvantages discussed with politicians and local residents.
