The AS+P entry boasts three independent clusters and “green” seams that link the east and west of the site to form a network of open spaces, a framework plan for flexible usages, and a sustainable, multi-modal mobility concept. It was developed by a holistic team of urban planners, landscape architects and mobility planners and swiftly won over the jury. The three clusters stand out for consistent mixed usage throughout: in the northeast, the emphasis is on offices and start-ups, in the west and south there are more apartments. The clusters are each grouped around a local plaza as a meeting place for all the neighbors.

A mobility strip featuring a Skytrain and a cycle path connects the main rail station with the stadium and the sports park in the south. A cycle bridge and the upgraded Karl Lehrstrasse, which is consciously opened up, improve east-west links. The Love Parade Memorial forms a key element in the concept. The tunnel ramp and flight of stairs are left in their current shape and embedded in a central plaza. A grove of 21 trees and a fountain offer a tranquil place for remembrance and reflection.

A total of 17 teams from Europe took up the call for entries by the City of Duisburg and GEBAG Duisburger Baugesellschaft mbH and submitted urban planning/open space planning proposals and ideas for the 30-hectare-large “mixed-usage future urban quarter integrated into the city”. The AS+P team now has the opportunity to advance the integrated concept on the basis of invaluable feedback from the citizens and the jury. In the second competition round, the proposals get revised and in February 2021 the public will choose its favorite. On the basis of this opinion formation process, in March the jury will then select the winner.
