Massing study of the area at location option 2
”Deutsches Hafenmuseum” will be one of the most important new museums to be established anywhere in Germany in recent decades. Several potential locations in the direct vicinity of the Port of Hamburg have been examined with a view to the new museum building. The AS+P study investigated not only to what extent the location could be reconciled with the museum concept but also other important urban planning-related considerations and questions pertaining to budget issues. And because of the industrial nature of the area surrounding the future museum, it was particularly important to analyze its direct vicinity. The necessary work was undertaken in several phases, each accompanied by the relevant voting procedures: • Phase 1 | Analysis of basic conditions: Basic research, analysis of location, preparation of a provisional spatial and function program • Phase 2 | Methodology: Preparation of and voting on the methods to be used for assessment purposes (list of criteria, clustering, weighting, etc.) • Phase 3 | Assessment of the possible locations: Analysis of the locations in line with the stipulated criteria and explanation of why the various locations were recommended • Phase 4 | Documentation: Report on results, executive summary, final presentation A well-founded recommendation for a location was made after coming to an agreement with the steering committee (representatives of the Department of Culture, urban development authorities, Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg, Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs).
