Modal Filter Concept
In Pfungstadt, several initiatives have already been introduced to ease traffic in the town center, including the western and northern bypasses. While these measures have brought noticeable improvements, traffic volumes in the core area remain high. The desire for additional traffic relief is strong. The heavy through traffic, particularly along Eberstädter Straße, continues to cause congestion and creates a sense of insecurity for cyclists. The central area partially offers limited space for pedestrians.
Bicycle Routes and Bicycle Parking Facilities
To address these issues, AS+P developed an integrated mobility concept for the town center, examining a range of traffic-calming measures and analyzing their interactions within an expanded study area. Through an online survey, the mobility habits of residents were captured, while traffic counts for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, along with license plate recognition, on site surveys, and a parking survey, provided the data foundation for the concept.
Throughout the project, workshops with local authorities and interested residents ensured broad participation.
Building on this basis, AS+P developed multiple proposals for Eberstädter Straße. Three of these were examined in closer detail: establishing a traffic calmed commercial zone, creating a pedestrian area in sections, and implementing a modal filter. In addition, AS+P developed overarching sub concepts for public transport, cycling, walking, and parking within the central area. Across all scenarios, the overarching goal is to enhance the quality of public space and improve traffic safety by reducing vehicle speeds and overall traffic volumes. The needs of local businesses, including delivery access and bicycle parking, were also factored into the planning. Both existing and new mobility services were integrated into a cohesive overall strategy.
