Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße – running at ground level and with integrated underground
Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, an elevated highway that dissects the suburban area, impacts heavily on Frankfurt's Ginnheim district. Given the planned modernization of the road and the ongoing discussion about completing the underground connection between the stations in Ginnheim and Bockenheimer Warte, the municipal planning authority has decided to commission an urban and transportation planning study for the dismantling of the road to ground level. The study was intended to set out possible solutions relating to urban planning, transportation and green spaces. It should also examine cost-effective ways of integrating the underground tracks. In terms of urban planning the task was to repair the breaks occasioned by the elevated expressway in Ginnheim's established structure and to conceive a suitable, street-side development and ways to make certain areas more compact to provide space for more subway stops. For financial reasons, the concept foresees the greatest part continuing above ground as part of a highly efficient urban road, namely the new Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, whose course is due to be altered. The concept will also create additional construction space to accommodate approximately 8,000 residents. In addition, a green strip straddling several districts will give existing and future residential areas an additional quality. After all aspects are considered, above all against the background of adding quality to tzhe district of Ginnheim and gaining new development areas, this visionary approach of dismantling the existing road seems constitute a sustainable alternative to the expensive option of modernizing the bridge.
