AS+P has been honoured with the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2026 in the category Residential – Housing for the project “E FRANKLIN” in Mannheim.

The internationally recognised award celebrates outstanding architectural achievements with a strong emphasis on design quality and urban integration. Since its inception, BIG SEE has highlighted innovative projects within the wider European context.

“E FRANKLIN” forms part of the urban redevelopment of the former US Army Franklin Barracks in Mannheim. The transformation of the site is based on a master plan by MVRDV, envisioning a vibrant and sustainable residential neighbourhood. A defining feature of the development is the “H-O-M-E” ensemble – a family of high-rise buildings whose form, height and colour articulate a new identity for the area.

With the “E” building, AS+P realised the first completed high-rise within this ensemble (completed in October 2023). The 13-storey structure rises from a two-storey base and develops a distinctive sculptural form through setbacks, cut-outs and variations in material, creating the appearance of a floating “E”.

The building comprises 113 apartments ranging from one to five rooms, as well as 21 maisonette townhouses with private gardens located within the base. Particular attention has been given to the ground floor, which establishes a direct and lively relationship with the public realm.

Jury statement (excerpt):
The project was selected for its clear volumetric composition and its well-proportioned integration into the existing urban fabric. Particular recognition was given to the treatment of the ground level and the project’s restrained material palette, which lends the building a timeless architectural presence.

With “E FRANKLIN”, AS+P contributes significantly to the sustainable and identity-forming development of Mannheim’s new urban quarter.
