Cairo’s most successful soccer club, the “Al Ahly Sports Club,” presented to the Egyptian public a study for a new 55,000-capacity multi-purpose stadium. It will be one of Cairo’s largest state-of-the-art soccer stadiums and will also be used for concerts and other major events. The 50-hectare site is approx. 25 kilometers west of downtown, is conveniently located on the Alexandria-Cairo Desert Highway, and has good public transportation links. The masterplan for the new stadium complex also envisages a museum, a soccer academy, and retail space.

AS+P was commissioned by the club to draw up a design as long ago as 2015, and on account of new framework conditions has now presented a revised concept. The stadium’s sheath will be a crystalline triangular structure that stands out three-dimensionally like a large piece of quartz in the desert. The club’s logo can be projected onto the façade and roof. At night the entire stadium shines brightly through its transparent, double-shell sheath.
