As part of a local public transport program, a subway network with an overall length of 176.5 km is to be realized in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh. The core element of the network is six subway lines connecting all the city’s districts with one another. This network will be complemented by individual bus rapid transit lines (BRT) and a comprehensive network of shuttlebus and local bus lines. The construction of the subway is already underway. The point where lines 1 and 5 intersect is the “Historical Center Station”, a major junction for up to 10 different bus lines. The most important destinations in the direct vicinity of the station are the King Abdulaziz Historical Center and a directly adjacent park. Six alternative designs and layouts with direct links to the underground subway stations were developed and assessed for 12 separate positions for arriving and departing busses. The layout of the individual bus lines was outlined for the design proposal selected and the entrances and exits to the bus station defined. The junction located in the northeast was adapted taking into account the future layouts of the bus lines and a possible signaling concept was developed. The areas and squares around the bus station were designed for the movements of large quantities of people, who also need to be taken into account when designing the adjacent junction and the relevant traffic signals.
