Comparison of location options
The existing Marschwegstadion in Oldenburg is the home of German soccer club VfB Oldenburg e.V. (VfB), which currently plays in the lower tier Regionalliga-Nord division. Given that in particular with regard to security and infrastructure issues the stadium does not fully meet the requirements of the German Football Association (DFB) for staging Third Division games, and that additional refurbishment measures also need to be conducted, the City of Oldenburg intends to modernize it in an appropriate way. In order to be able to make a reliable decision as regards the required investment, the City of Oldenburg commissioned AS+P to initially investigate the possible construction of a new stadium. AS+P examined seven alternative locations within the city limits with regard to their suitability as a long-term location for a stadium, and compared their advantages and disadvantages in terms of structural and operational circumstances with those of the existing location of Marschwegstadion. In this context, AS+P developed a diagram of a stadium for assessment purposes, which at a more detailed stage was adapted in each case to the spatial and operational circumstances of the location. The result of this overall “Critical Location Evaluation” will, subject to detailed individual reviews, serve the City of Oldenburg as the basis for making a decision on the long-term choice of a structurally and economically viable location for a stadium in Oldenburg.
