The City2e project was sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) in the electro-mobility section of the Research and Development Sponsorship program. Alongside AS+P Gmbh the project partners were Siemens AG, the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy, and Mobility (IKEM), and Berlin Technical University. AS+P's brief in the project was the integration of street-lamp parking into urban planning. Taking the Prenzlauer Berg district in Berlin as an example, a potential solution was drawn up in the form of car charging islands. These concentrate charging stations in one place, are modular in structure and can vary in terms of size and position in the road. They can serve as charging opportunities for electric station and non-station-based vehicles, be they privately owned or part of car sharing schemes. A flexible module that includes for example, facilities such as a kiosk, an ice cream parlor, a barbecue, public lavatories, a parcel pick-up station or secure bicycle parking, can take up one parking space. This way the charging islands also serve as a social meeting point in the district and are subject to a degree of local social control. The module's outer surfaces can also be used as advertising space.
