The city of Dammam is situated along the Arabian Gulf in close proximity to the city of Manama, Bahrain. Major transport infrastructure by road, rail and air connects the Dammam region perfectly with the rest of the Kingdom as well as with the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Dammam is already established as one of the most important economic growth poles making it a pivotal point for the urban and economic development in Saudi Arabia. According to municipal plans it is expected that city growth will orient to the North and West of the existing urban fabric. Thus it is fortunate that the Ministry of Housing (MOH) controls a large tract of land within this area suitable for city extension. Goal of the district development plan for Dahyat A Dammam is to ensure the holistic integration of the existing natural landscape potentials as well as boost the overall growth of the northern extension to form the basis for economically successful, socially balanced and ecologically responsible city growth. The most important development objective of this extension will be to establish communities of place based on a human scale as well as a diverse environment featuring high quality public spaces for the future residents. The clusters accommodate a variety of urban patterns enabling low to high-density residential developments and integrate centers providing commercial and public service functions for the residents. This variety in densities and uses establishes truly self-sustaining communities. The implementation of additional key features and attractions, such as shopping malls, culture and entertainment centers, business cores as well as a science/ research campus, leads to economic balance and job opportunities for an overall sustainable development.
