The site of the former mine has not been in use since 2001. It covers approx. 23.5 ha and represents the City’s largest expanse of fallow land. The aim of this concept study is to provide a clear picture of the vision of a “sustainable innovation quarter”, i.e., a modern working environment. The comprehensive integrated development strategy devised by AS+P as part of a dialogue-oriented process shows how and under what circumstances the area could be developed profitably. The strategy takes account of all the findings from the concluding operations plan procedure for the site’s mining-related activities, insights from the mobility projects, and recommendations by the local authority’s Development Advisory Council (KEB). A large number of parties have various plans for the site. These demands will all need to be reconciled with one another and an agreement reached in line with the location’s specific conditions. As its main users, corporations in sectors such as environmental medicine, the healthcare industry, chemicals-related R&D, and new energy sources/mobility come into question. There is a particular focus on the quantity of open spaces and greenery, as well as on the latter’s quality. The key outcome of the present concept study is to offer a objectives framework to which the various players agree, one that defines the requisite development qualities and, at the same time, provides scope for potential users working in fields that have yet to be defined. It also provides a basis for possible further stages in the process. The concept study describes both usage categories and urban-planning-related interrelationships, and illustrates ideas via renderings and sketches.
