Schematic footprint
As the home of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic, the federal state capital Munich boasts two symphony orchestras of the highest international standard. However, only the Philharmonic has a venue of its own in the form of the large auditorium at the Gasteig cultural center which, given its existing volume, does not have optimum acoustics for symphonic concerts. This, plus the fact that shared use of one venue by two orchestras in Munich is the subject of heated debate, has in the past led to intense discussions regarding new concert hall locations. In the spring of 2015, AS+P initially produced a preliminary study relating to the debate surrounding the location of a new concert hall. As part of the further planning phase, AS+P was tasked with examining the suitability of five locations in greater depth and highlighting possible realization risks and conflict potential. Against this background the locations were examined based on the criteria location identity, location characteristics, availability of space, and costs, and their suitability for the construction of a concert hall evaluated comparatively. On the basis of a specified layout, a schematic concept adapted to spatial and structural circumstances was developed for each location. Using weighted criteria, the suitability of the locations was then assessed, and recommendations derived for the ongoing process as part of the realization of the project.
