AS+P created the development plan for constructing a new football stadium offering space for some 35,000 spectators along with training facilities together with transportation and functional areas – for the new Freiburg im Breisgau stadium. This was based on an urban development masterplan also designed by AS+P. Project work was characterized by close, constructive collaboration with the Freiburg City Council and numerous experts from various disciplines. The stadium’s main user will be German football club SC Freiburg, which is of great social, cultural and economic significance for both the city of Freiburg and the south Baden region. The procedure for implementing the development plan was greatly shaped by topics hotly discussed by both the general public and the politicians, such as the choice of venue for the planned stadium, air safety or the protection of species. A total of well over 200 statements were submitted as part of the public consultation process and were then systematically evaluated and assessed. Particular care was taken when examining the ideas and alternative plans proposed by local inhabitants and the so-called “mirror-opposite version.” Ultimately, in close, constructive collaboration with the City Council and numerous experts from various disciplines AS+P evolved a development plan that was approved by the city in July 2018.
