Basic approach “Quality”: 15,000 spectators
The “Grünwalder Stadion”, located in the Munich district of Untergiesing-Harlaching, is used by TSV München von 1860 and the 2nd men’s and women’s teams of FC Bayern Munich as a venue in the German Football Association (DFB) league. As the matches of TSV München von 1860 are particularly well attended, the City of Munich is endeavouring to expand the stadium’s existing capacity of 15,000 spectators. In this context, AS+P was commissioned to prepare a feasibility study on expanding the capacity of the municipal stadium on Grünwalder Strasse. In the course of this study, in addition to the structural and functional feasibility, the assessment of the acoustic conditions associated with a capacity expansion, the effects on traffic and the associated costs were also analysed. Theoretical stadium capacity expansion potentials of between 2,000 and 8,000 spectators were discussed conceptually, whereby the development prospects for the “Grünwalder Stadion” were ultimately worked out in depth as a so-called “basic approach for 15,000 spectators” (focus: quality) or as an “expansion approach to 18,060 spectators” (focus: quality + quantity), in particular due to the cramped location in the built-up urban environment and the given site-specific framework conditions (height difference Isarhangkante, routing, accessibility, etc.). AS+P considered it unrealistic to expand the capacity of the Grünwalder Stadion beyond this.
