Owned by the City of Karlsruhe, the Wildpark Stadium only to a limited extent meets the functional and business requirements associated with staging German Football Association events today. For this reason, the City of Karlsruhe, with the agreement of Karlsruher Sport-Club (KSC), took the decision to completely rebuild the existing stadium. To ensure that the new stadium is holistically designed in a functional and meaningful way, AS+P was commissioned to draw up an overarching masterplan. The masterplan identifies and evaluates the existing functional context on site as well as in terms of how it will interact with local residential, transport, design, and open space needs. The aim is for all the parties involved to adopt the schematic masterplan by consensus as an informal planning basis, thus ruling out, or aligning opposing planning intentions or conflicts of interest at an early stage of the project. Given this scenario, with the agreement of KSC, in future the main user of the stadium, the City of Karlsruhe authorities were involved in the elaboration of the masterplan. The masterplan and design plan are important elements of the Letter of Intent pertaining to the further course of the construction project concluded on April 15, 2015 between the City of Karlsruhe and Karlsruher SC.
