For Mannheim and the entire Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, the development of the new urban quarter at the main station represents one of the most important inner-city projects of the coming years. It envisages giving a new lease of life to facilities that are already deserted or are due to become so in the foreseeable future. The concept aims to create a lively quarter whose many facilities are appealing and boast a high power of attraction. In addition to strengthening the area in terms of services and as a residential district, the existing facilities such as commercial premises and educational establishments are intended to be retained. Furthermore, the plan also aims to provide scope for other commercial premises, public cultural and leisure facilities and compatible retails outlets. The reconfiguration of the infrastructure around the former "railroad island" associated with the development also means an up-grade for the Lindenhof district. On the basis of the draft by the company ASTOC, which took first prize, an urban planning framework plan was devised, which in turn is based on the development plan. The development plan contains specifications for the future facilities, sets conditions for the urban structure, manages the juxtaposition of the various facilities and, by means of suitable stipulations, prevents urban planning conflicts.
