In 2020, the town of Bad Vilbel was scheduled to host the 60th Hessentag. This ten-day regional celebration is known from past experience to attract immense crowds. Indeed, at weekends and on public holidays the numbers of visitors can reach up to 150,000. Such large numbers of people mean the organizers tend to face considerable challenges in terms of transport logistics. The transportation authority of the town of Bad Vilbel commissioned AS+P to draw up a comprehensive transport concept for the Hessentag. This included above all drafting and coordinating a breakdown of quantities for the various modes of transport including distribution by visitor arrival/starting point, a location study for the large car parks, the creation of a detailed traffic man­age­ment system and a concept for closing certain areas to traffic as well as planning the shuttle service between the event site and large car parks. Public transport logistics involved intensive consultations with Deutsche Bahn, RMV and traffiQ, in particular so as to take the ongoing extension work to the S-Bahn into account. Given the high numbers of visitors expected to travel by train the bus station also had to be to temporarily relocated. Another important focus aside from the interests of cycle traffic was conceiving the conflict-free movement of pedestrians to and from the car parks, the railway station and bus station. All aspects of planning were coordinated with all the partners involved through regular working groups. For all the effort, on March 19, 2020 the 60th Hessentag in Bad Vilbel was cancelled on account of the corona pandemic.
