Yanbu Al-Sinaiyah lies on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Together with the city of Jubail on the Arabian Gulf it serves as a model development undertaken by the Royal Commission of Yanbu and Jubail. Its 11 km long waterfront offers an attractive opportunity to capitalize on the atmosphere and natural habitat of the coastline as well as on the sea itself. Unlike its counterpart, however, Yanbu has not made as much use of its prime seafront location. The Royal Commission intends to better exploit this location advantage and to develop Yanbu's coastline into an attractive recreational magnet, serving both the city dweller as well as national and inter­national tourists. AS+P was assigned a twofold task. First, it was to review the city's existing waterfront development program and make recommendations as to its feasibility and appropriate components towards enhancing the waterfront's attraction. The second task was to develop a comprehensive urban design plan for the entire coastline. A key element was AS+P's recommendation to divide the waterfront into 13 sub-areas to enhance their identity, implementation and marketability. Proposals regarding urban design, land use, development phasing and design guidelines were made for all areas. Together with a team of professionals in the fields of landscaping, tourism, special lighting and signage, an integrated waterfront development concept was achieved.
