On behalf of the Stuttgart region and the Filder municipal working party, AS+P conducted a study of the Filder region, which embraces parts of Stuttgart and Esslingen as well as five other municipalities on the Filder plateau, and which is defined by dynamic demographic and economic trends. The airport, the trade fair, numerous economic centers, universities, and research facilities, not to mention the excellent transport infrastructure, are all of significance. The new railroad track between Stuttgart and Ulm being planned on the back of the “Stuttgart 21” redevelopment of Stuttgart’s main station, which will include a new stop at the airport and a new regional station at the terminal, will make the region considerably easier to reach, resulting in advantages as a location a boost with regard to economic and demographic prosperity. The high density and dynamic development on the one hand, and the particular quality of the agricultural land and recreational facilities on the other lead to considerable conflicts of use and competition for land. The study aims to reveal the potential for future regional development while preserving the quality of open spaces. Taking regionally significant projects into account, the relevant aspects of the regional and settlement development are presented in a stereogram. There is a focus on how to make use of the advantages the new mobility hub will create in terms of accessibility. As regards priority areas of particular relevance, more detailed statements about future development will be made. The informal spatial concept serves as the basis for regional and municipal planning. The study was compiled together with representatives of the region and the municipalities and economic, mobility, agriculture, and nature conservation experts.
