The site at the intersection of Boschetsrieder Strasse and Drygalski Allee is in the 19th precinct of the Munich, state capital of Bavaria, in the southwestern district of Obersendling. Given the high demand for affordable living space in Munich, Accumulata, together with the City of Munich, intends to develop an attractive urban residential quarter with around 800 to 1,000 apartments on what at the moment is a disused site. On the basis of an urban development study conducted by AS+P in 2010 and with the latter acting as lead, key data for resolution were initially compiled and subsequently approved by the city council in June 2012. In close collaboration with the developer and the City of Munich, AS+P then organized an urban development and landscape planning competition in the form of a two-stage, cooperative competition by invitation in accordance with the 2008 Guidelines for Planning Competitions (RPW). Following the initial stage involving 12 international firms, in January 2013 six were short-listed for the second stage, in which they addressed their design concepts in greater detail. Furthermore, in between the two stages the general public was very much involved in the proceedings, with the results being integrated in the work during the second stage. From among the entries submitted by international firms the jury chose the design by von Ballmoos Krucker Architekten in Zurich as the winner. On the basis of the urban development concept, legal zoning plan proceedings will be the next stage in the planning work.
