The competition brief was the challenging architectural and urban planning redevelopment of two central inner-city built areas in Mainz. Firstly, the Karstadt complex in a prominent location on Ludwigsstrasse was to be redeveloped and repurposed and secondly the neighboring complex on Fuststrasse was to be removed and replaced by a new building. The final aim was to create a high-quality urban shopping district that successfully caters to a host of uses such as shopping, hospitality, culture, hotels and living. In order to ensure that these two central development areas not far from the Mainz Cathedral and the Staatstheater blend well into the planned overall development of the main inner-city axis from Schillerplatz to Gutenbergplatz, the competition participants were asked in the ideas section to draw up a master plan for the urban planning development of the area of Ludwigsstrasse from Schillerplatz to Gutenbergplatz. The competition entry for AS+P’s overall urban planning concept is based on a functional and structural analysis and develops a design concept that optimizes the district’s various existing unique features and combines them to form a new shopping district. The contribution to the ideas section won 1st prize.
