PTS Station F, Module 2: View from north-west
Terminal 3 in the south of Frankfurt Airport is to be connected quickly and efficiently to the existing passenger systems and regional and long-distance railway station in the north of the airport complex by means of a new Personal Transport System (PTS). A new PTS station with a central platform will be installed above the entrance ramp to Terminal 1. It will consist of a total of four modules: the PTS station itself, and its connections to the long-distance railway station, Sheraton Hotel, and Terminal 1. On the basis of the front-end plans prepared by London-based office Grimshaw AS+P was commissioned to provide additional planning services. The main areas (station and connecting passages) of the steel structure, which will rest on elevated supports, are located at the height of level 3 of the existing building which it will access. Rooms and central controls for the structural installations and PTS are housed in Technical Level 2 beneath the station. The new PTS station at Terminal 1 will function as the terminus of a 5.6 km long PTS track that has still to be built, and once installed will be operated independently of the existing system connecting Terminal 1 and 2. The new PTS is intended to emphatically foster the use of public transport to and from Frankfurt Airport and guarantee minimum connecting times (MCT) for transfer passengers between terminals 1, 2, and 3. It is a challenging planning task and the construction logistics are highly complex. Not only must planning depend on the PTS system chosen, but there are a large number of planning and construction interfaces, and the station must be built without interrupting normal airport operations.
