PTS Station F, Module 2: View from north-west
Terminal 3 in the south of Frankfurt Airport is to be connected quickly and efficiently to the existing passenger facilities and to the regional and long-distance railway station in the north of the airport area by means of a new passenger transport system (PTS). To this end, a new PTS station with a central platform will be built above the access road at Terminal 1. It consists of a total of four modules: the PTS station and its connections to the long-distance railway station, the Sheraton Hotel and Terminal 1. AS+P was commissioned to provide further planning services on the basis of a qualified preliminary design by the London-based firm Grimshaw. The main areas (station and connecting corridors) of the steel structure, which is supported by columns, are located at level 3 of the existing buildings to be connected. Rooms and control centres for supplying the buildings and the PTS are located on technical level 2 below the station. The new PTS station at Terminal 1 is the terminus of a new 5.6 km PTS line that will be built and operated independently of the existing system between Terminals 1 and 2. The new PTS is intended to promote the use of public transport for arrivals and departures at Frankfurt Airport in the long term and to guarantee the minimum connecting time time (MCT) for passengers transferring between Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The planning challenge and the high level of construction logistics complexity of the project are characterised by the dependence on the selection of the PTS system, a large number of planning and construction interfaces, and implementation during ongoing operations.
